ISO 45001 OHSMS Implementation

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001:2018 is the replacement to OHSAS 18001 and it is known as the “ISO standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems” (OHSMS) that provides practical solutions for worker safety at a workplace. It will provide organizations a structure in which they can work to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. It will create a global foundation of worker safety standards and inspections that can be used globally.

Purpose of ISO 45001?

This standard will provide a framework from which Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) objectives can be effectively managed. For example, it can fulfil the needs of those who manage, use, or benefit from global supply chains. Just as ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 have provided consensus solutions to questions of quality management and environmental protection in the global marketplace, ISO 45001 will help drive solutions for improving worker safety across the globe.

ISO 45001 is a perfect fit for your organization’s need if you want to demonstrate a commitment in managing the safety of workers and interested parties. If you have already implemented a quality or environmental management system aligned with the new Annex SL structure ISO 45001 can be integrated smoothly.

Benefits of Implementing ISO 45001

The companies (large and small) have used ISO 45001 standard to great effect. The benefits of OHSMS cannot be overstated, following are the few of these benefits:

Steps to Implement ISO 45001

It is highly recommended to start OHSMS implementation only after getting its working knowledge/ Familiarization with it. Please consult HM Consulting team for more details and support related to ISO 45001 awareness training.

  1. Prepare documentation – After finishing all applicable documentation and implementing it, HM consulting recommend an organization should also perform following steps to ensure a successful certification:

  2. Internal audit – The internal audit is the only activity to check your OHSMS implementation. The goal is to ensure that records are in place to confirm compliance of the processes and to find problems and weaknesses that would otherwise stay hidden. Please consult HM Consulting team for support on Internal audit.

  3. Management review – A formal review by your management to evaluate the relevant facts about the management system processes to make appropriate decisions and assign resources.

  4. Corrective actions – Following the internal audit and management review, you need to correct the root cause of any identified problems and document how they were resolved.

  5. Certification Audit: The company certification process is divided into two stages:

I. Stage One (documentation review) – The auditors from your chosen certification body will check to ensure your documentation meets the requirements of ISO 45001.

II. Stage Two (Final Assessment) – At this stage, the certification body auditors will check whether your actual activities are compliant with both ISO 45001 and your own documentation by reviewing documents, records, and company practices. Defiantly this audit will be harder than the previous one. Best wishes! You may take HM Consulting’s Extended Network Support.
